The situation with Alexei Navalny can be used as a fictitious excuse to spoil relations between Russia and Germany, said Waldemar Gerdt, member of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, MP from the Alternative for Germany party. His words are quoted on the website of the TV channel “360”.

According to Gerdt, during a discussion of the situation with the oppositionist in the Bundestag, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) called for the suspension of the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. “[CDU] is very obediently working out the version of its master, the United States,” the politician said.

Gerdt also added that the CDU is pushing for a decision that infringes on German interests.

On September 7, German government spokesman Steffen Seibert reported that the country's Chancellor Angela Merkel admits a change in attitude towards Nord Stream 2 and the introduction of sanctions against it due to the situation around the Russian. Prior to that, she argued that the project is purely economic and not related to politics.

Alexei Navalny became ill on the morning of August 20 during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow, the plane urgently landed in Omsk. On August 22, the oppositionist was taken to a Berlin clinic. German doctors conducted a study and announced the poisoning of the patient with the poison of the Novichok group. Russian doctors found no poisons in Navalny's body.
