This opinion was expressed by 24 Channel Defense Express editor-in-chief, military expert Oleg Katkov, noting that the Russians can afford not to develop new models for some time. He also called the factor in the production of weapons more important than money.

In Russia, a large amount of old-style weapons have remained in warehouses since Soviet times. Now the Russians are taking out a huge amount of these weapons from storage warehouses, repairing, modernizing and sending them to the front.

However, at a certain time, these weapons will run out and then the issue of shortage will also arise in Russia, the military expert noted.

For example, if the United States decided to more actively restore old armored vehicles, in particular Abrams tanks, which are located somewhere in the desert in Nevada, perhaps the situation with the shortage of weapons would be a little different.

“Ukraine also received far from new Leopard 1 tanks – they are old-style weapons from the 1960s-1970s. There is such a trend and it can develop. However, it is unknown how much stock of old equipment remains in warehouses,” Katkov emphasized.

The queue for fighter jets until the 2030s

He noted that we are talking specifically about the shortage of new modern weapons, the production of which takes quite a long time.

It is important to understand that the cost of new weapons is not only in money, but also in time. Today, time is a more important parameter for the cost of weapons than its monetary equivalent,” he noted. together with weapons, is being formed at the beginning of the 2030s. Relatively speaking, if Ukraine had the opportunity to buy the F-35 right now, it would receive the first aircraft around 2032.

“A similar situation with the systems Patriot, HIMARS complexes, modern tanks, new F-16 fighters, the queue for which is now until 2030. All this is stretched out over time, because production does not keep up with the flow of orders that exist, and there are more and more of them,” – explained Oleg Katkov.
