The secret of the durability of ancient Egyptian silk is revealed

The ancient Egyptians used special technologies to process linen fabric, which allowed it to persist for thousands of years. Scientists at the University of Brittany-South (France) have conducted a study to uncover the secret of this strength, according to Nature Plants.

Experts took tissue samples from the Middle Kingdom (2033-1963 BC) and subjected them to a series of analyzes using modern equipment: electron and multiphoton microscopes, an X-ray tomograph.

The results showed that flax fibers were almost as dense as modern materials, although they were handcrafted by the ancient Egyptians. In addition, the fibers were uniform, which gave the fiber flexibility and strength.

Scientists have concluded that the Egyptians used a special technology of soaking in the last stages of flax processing. Descriptions of the works can be found in some historical sources, in particular, in Pliny the Elder.

For example, the Egyptians placed flax stalks in water and pressed them down with stones. The material was kept in this state for five to seven days. Then the stems were dried, placed in a damp place and also beaten off with stones. As a result, flax turned into a set of fine fibers.

Scientists noted that modern technology is not so perfect. The collected flax is simply left in the field, where it is exposed to unstable weather. The result is a heterogeneous material. Research also showed that Egyptian linen was more porous, and therefore lighter and more durable, than the products of our day.

Earlier it was reported that archaeologists in Egypt conducted research at the foot of the Great Pyramid. They found the funeral boat of Pharaoh Cheops there.
