To get approval for Lawrence Faucet's operation, the Maryland researchers needed special permission from the FDA Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Doctors submitted 300 pages of documents to the department describing the operation.

After a pig-to-human heart transplant, scientists found evidence of a pig virus lurking in the heart, and now they have better tests to look for hidden viruses.
