VTsIOM General Director Valery Fedorov said that the Russians are afraid of a new military conflict. He stated this in an interview with Izvestia.

The correspondent asked him how high the level of anxiety among Russians is due to external threats, and whether the population fears the possibility of a military conflict.

“Society fears a new military conflict, the agenda is alarming. The assessment of the presence of an external military threat to Russia has sharply increased. Before that, it had been decreasing for a couple of years, but now it has grown very significantly. The sensations are very disturbing, the external context is changing. Of course, people do not like it, it causes fear, frustration and hope that confrontation will be avoided, “Fedorov replied.

He also added that the slogan “if only there was no war”, which was relevant for the Soviet people, is returning. “Therefore, any signs of detente in relations with the West are perceived very positively,” stressed the general director of VTsIOM.

As the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov stated earlier in December, Moscow expects to receive concrete answers from Washington to its proposals on security guarantees in January 2022. A Kremlin spokesman noted that the United States and its allies are unfriendly towards Russia.
