The technology of virtual SIM cards (eSIM) will allow Russians to remotely change service providers, buy numbers cheaper, and manage a large number of devices. Petr Prokofiev, deputy head of the Skoltech-based NTI Competence Center for wireless communications and the Internet of Things, named such advantages to Russians in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“A physical SIM card is a technology of the last century, it has been with us for almost 30 years. And now it seriously limits the capabilities of both “smart” IoT devices and subscriber equipment, ”the expert noted. That is why, he explained, at one time the production of virtual cards was launched.
Remote operator change, as Prokofiev emphasized, is especially convenient for those who travel a lot. In this case, you will not have to buy a new SIM card, but simply connect to the local network for a while.
However, the introduction of such technology requires the creation of a network for its support. In Russia, its implementation can only be called formally completed, the specialist complained. Despite the fact that the technology appeared two or three years ago, nothing has changed in the legislative area in this area, and you need to issue an eSIM in the same way as a regular card – according to a passport in a communication salon.
