The Russians are even drawing tires like real bombers to give the decoy more realism
Russia began painting Tu-95MS strategic bombers at its main Engels bomber base, known as Engels 2, after repeated attacks. The occupiers are preparing so-called baits.
This is evidenced by satellite images of Planet Labs obtained by The War Zone.
Photos taken Sept. 29 show decoys adorned on the asphalt of the air base. The drawings are almost a copy of the characteristic plan form of the four-engine Tu-95MS bomber, right down to its black color. The second bait looks partially completed next to the finished one.
Journalists suggest that the Russians most likely use paint for the drawings. It’s also interesting that in the photo they put tires like the real Tu-95 to the left of it. This is added for realism that “the bait will be more convincing since tires are now a common countermeasure used by some Russian Air Force aircraft while parked.”
The authors of the article believe that such baits have a number of purposes. The first is to fool the satellites and disrupt any Ukrainian strike operationsby providing incorrect targeting data.
“But this clearly won't work, since even limited high-resolution commercial satellite imagery can clearly distinguish silhouettes of aircraft from real ones. Using multiple sources of intelligence data, such as satellite images of synthetic aperture radar (SAR), would make it clear that the target is not a three-dimensional object,” the material notes.
Recall that it was previously reported that the Russians are covering their planes with tires. Military-political observer Alexander Kovalenko explained why the occupiers are doing this.
