An aircraft engine based on an automobile engine is being developed in Russia. Research has been conducted since 2018 to find out exactly what needs to be changed in a car engine to become an aircraft engine.
We are talking about APD-500 aircraft engines, developed on the basis of automobile engines for the Aurus series. According to Mikhail Gordin, General Director of the Central Institute of Aviation Motors named after P.I. Baranov, the Yak-18T light aircraft will receive a prototype of an aircraft engine built on the basis of an automobile engine. Test flights are scheduled to begin in late 2021 or early 2022. There are also plans to send these engines into mass production, but this will require at least two and a half years of work.
Also, according to Gordin, a version of the APD-500 will be made for the acrobatic Tsirkach aircraft. “We plan to assemble this demonstrator by winter and test it on ground stands. Then we plan to install it on a flying laboratory based on the Yak-52 aircraft and start flying next year, ”Gordin said.
