Правительство РФ предлагает расторгнуть договор с Британией с 1956 года: о чем идет речь

The Government of the Russian Federation submitted to the State Duma a bill to denounce the almost 70-year-old fisheries agreement with the UK. The agreement was concluded between the USSR and Britain, but continued to be valid because Russia declared itself the legal successor of the Soviet Union.

As Radio Liberty reports, the government bill appeared in the electronic database on Saturday, January 20.

Under a treaty signed in May 1956, British fishing vessels were allowed to fish in certain areas of the Barents Sea along the coast of the Kola Peninsula. Ships were also allowed to sail and anchor freely in these waters.

The Russian government proposed to denounce the document due to the fact that Great Britain, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, abandoned the regime of greatest facilitation of trade with Russia.

In the explanatory note The note to the bill states that the agreement is “mostly unilateral” and its denunciation “will not cause serious foreign policy and economic consequences for the Russian Federation.”

The government “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” notes that the likely rupture of the deal will be “unique of its kind”, since “international agreements in the food sector have never been denounced before.”

The Federation of British Fisheries Organizations said that Moscow’s decision will not affect the industry in any way, since British fishermen have not recently fished in the places discussed in the dogore. The British government called the decision of the Russian authorities an example of self-isolation of Russia.

Recall that the British police have created a new unit to counter threats emanating from China, Russia and Iran. They said they were very concerned about the risks ahead of national elections expected this year.
