Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke about Moscow's recognition of the Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden as the country's president. He answered the corresponding question from Interfax.
Lavrov recalled that the head of the American state is approved not by Moscow, but by Washington. “The US President is recognized in accordance with the laws of this country, and we will proceed from this,” the head of the department said.
Earlier, electoral colleges in several American states finally decided on their votes in the election of the new US president. The first to complete the voting procedure were the electors of the state of Vermont: all three votes in the state were cast for Biden.
In addition, the vote has already ended in Indiana and New Hampshire: incumbent American leader Donald Trump received 11 votes from Indiana's electors, and Biden received four in New Hampshire. The current US president received 11 more votes from the electors in Tennessee and six in Mississippi.
On November 3, the next presidential elections were held in the United States. According to the media, Biden gained the necessary electoral votes to win and beat Trump. The democrat has already proclaimed himself the elected president of the United States.
An electoral college vote is scheduled for Monday, December 14th. Trump is expected to receive 232 votes, Biden 306. The votes will be counted by Congress on January 6, 2021. The President-elect will take the oath of office at the inauguration on January 20.
