~6 0~p>Russia and Belarus plan to conduct large-scale joint military exercises on the territory of the latter in 2025.
Russia and Belarus in 2025 they want to conduct joint exercises of a “regional group of troops” on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, which were supposed to take place in 2023.
This was stated by Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin in an interview with Russian propagandists.
According to him, the decision to conduct joint exercises on the territory of Belarus or the Russian Federation once every two years was made in 2009. They were conducted in the formats of joint strategic (operational-strategic) exercises (“Zapad-2009”, “Zapad-2013”, “Zapad-2017”, “Zapad-2021”) and joint operational exercises (JOU – “Union Shield-2011” ), “Union Shield-2015”, “Union Shield-2019”, etc.).
“In other words, every two years the exercises “West” or “Shield” were held Union.” Based on the established sequence, the Union Shield exercises were supposed to take place in 2023. They were scheduled for September 22-26, but they were canceled. In 2024, joint exercises (operational/strategic) of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation were not announced. Accordingly, the holding of one exercise every two years was missed,” writes “MotolkoHelp”.
According to the resource, from February 10 to February 20, 2022, unscheduled SOU “Union Resolve-2022” took place on the territory of Belarus, and four days after their end, Russia invaded Ukraine.
Based on the fact that Union Shield 2023 did not take place last year, the publication suggests that the exercises in 2025 on the territory of the Republic of Belarus may not take place. The reason is the war in Ukraine.
“The Russian Federation may simply not have enough soldiers for both war and exercises. You can also recall the CSTO exercises “Combat Brotherhood-2023” that took place in September 2023 in the Republic of Belarus, in which a very modest number of Russian troops took part contingent. However, even if the exercises in 2025 are not cancelled, all troop movements on the territory of the Republic of Belarus will be carefully monitored to ensure that February 2022 is not repeated,” the publication says.
Recall that earlier the Minister of Defense of Belarus Viktor Khrenin complained that Ukraine had assembled a strike force of 112-114 thousand people near their border.
