On Friday, November 17, the State Duma of the Russian Federation approved its largest federal budget in history. According to him, spending will increase by about 25% in 2024, and record amounts will go to defense.
Next year, defense spending is expected to exceed social spending for the first time in Russia's modern history. The Kremlin is understood to be seeking to bolster support for President Vladimir Putin as Russia prepares for presidential elections in March.
The amount of 10.8 billion rubles is truly unprecedented. By comparison, the 2023 budget included 6.4 trillion rubles in defense spending. So, this is an increase of more than 1.5 times.
As Western analyst Richard Connolly notes, we are talking about resolving the war in Ukraine and readiness for military confrontation with the West forever.
“This means the complete remilitarization of Russian society,” he said.
