The Russian defense industry is unable to provide equipment to the army reserves – ISW

Russia will have to dramatically increase its capacity.

The Russian defense industry will not be able to fully provide new reserves with equipment and weapons, even despite on the Army's ability to maintain the current tempo of operations.

This is reported by the American Institute for the Study of War ISW.

“Russian industry is capable of producing about 250-300 new and thoroughly modernized tanks annually. At the same time, the defense industrial base is unlikely to be able to fully provide for the Russian Federation's reserves, despite Russia's constant efforts to expand the Russian OPB. Operational and strategic reserves, as a rule, are not afraid,” the analysts’ report said.

In addition, the occupiers can annually repair about 250-300 tanks that were in long-term storage or were damaged on the battlefield, according to Ukrainian military observer Konstantin Mashovets.

ISW estimates that Moscow will be able to expand its defense industry and accumulate resources if it maintains the initiative throughout the war zone through 2024, although unlikely to a sufficient extent to provide a large number of mobilized reservists or conscripts.

“The reported concentration of Russian reserves throughout Ukraine largely coincides with Russian priorities at the front, but is not necessarily indicative of upcoming Russian operations,” experts say.

Russian troops have 17 regiments, 16 battalions and two tactical groups at the regimental-battalion level in reserve. The total number of Russian personnel in reserve units is about 60-62 thousand people, but Russian troops have equipped only about 20 thousand tactical and operational-tactical level reservists with weapons and equipment.

It became known earlier that the authorities of Russia are trying in every possible way to put business on a war footing as much as possible, but the amount of weapons that the aggressor country has is unlikely will allow them to repeat some kind of large-scale offensive against Ukraine in 2024.
