The Russian authorities set out to increase the audience and export of domestic cloud gaming services 55 times. The industry should achieve such results by 2030. To accelerate the conquest of the international market, Russian companies have promised to support with grants through the Fund for the Promotion of Innovations, but achieving this goal will require investments of hundreds of millions of dollars.
The promotion of Russian cloud gaming is described in the roadmap of the New Communication Internet Technologies project, which Kommersant reviewed.
According to the idea, by 2030 the volume of export of cloud gaming services should grow from $ 2.9 million in 2020 to $ 160 million in 2030. Sales on the domestic market should grow at the same rate: from 0.8 billion rubles in 2020 to 44.3 billion rubles in 2030.
The authors of the concept assumed that the Russian audience of cloud gaming platforms in ten years will increase from 180,000 to 10 million people. Now, according to analysts' calculations, gaming is growing by an average of 5.9% per year, and the pandemic and mass self-isolation have only spurred this growth. With the proliferation of 5G networks, more and more people will be able to play “heavy” games on mobile devices, which will lead to a dramatic increase in users.
The potential of Russian games on the foreign market is still underestimated. To stimulate supply and demand, the government plans to support companies working in this area with grants.
Cloud gaming allows you to play video games on smartphones or computers with weak hardware, since the entire computing load is taken over by a remote server. According to a report by the consulting firm PwC, this market is now in its infancy, but domestic IT giants, such as Sberbank and Mail.ru Group, are already investing in it. The rise in prices for game consoles and video cards only helps the advancement of cloud gaming.
The Russian GFN (a partner of the American Nvidia) expects that cloud gaming in Russia will grow by 100% every year, but the popularization of this format will largely depend on the investments of large companies in infrastructure and equipment. According to GFN executive director Pavel Troitsky, investments must amount to hundreds of millions of dollars to achieve the required effect. In addition, he pointed out that there are many other obstacles for Russian services to enter European markets, for example, legislation that prevents the placement of servers abroad. Therefore, at first, it will be possible to cover only a small number of countries that are relatively close to the borders of Russia, Troitsky concluded.
