The ruins of a “ghost castle” were found on the Scottish island of Öland
Scottish archaeologists have announced one of the largest discoveries of 2021. The ruins of Serbia Borg castle have been found on the island of Öland, SVT reports.
The area was surveyed using radar. The data showed that there is a large number of stone fragments of the foundation underground. They lay next to the fortress wall, and their location corresponded to the design of other historical castles.
Serbia Borg has long been considered a “ghost castle”. Mentions about him survived in the work of the priest Nikolaus Vallinus “About Åland” in 1703, but without specific indications of the location.
The authors of the new study concluded that the castle had previously been searched for in the wrong place. Archaeologists conducted excavations near the village of Serbu, which is about ten kilometers from the real castle.
Serbu Borg Castle was the largest on the island. Scientists noted that local tribes could consider Öland a sacred place – there were sacrifices there for two millennia.
“The discovery of another ancient castle on the island is sensational in many ways,” noted the members of the archaeological expedition.
Earlier it was reported that the ruins of a medieval village were excavated in Scotland. It was dated back to the 14-17 centuries.
