The Perseverance rover is currently exploring the Jezero crater on Mars, while NASA engineers are testing technology that allows the device to independently navigate the rocky terrain of another planet.
Actually, the rover has drivers. They use special glasses to see the rover's route. They call the Jezero crater a paradise for an all-terrain vehicle driver.
Nevertheless, the Perseverance rover must learn to self-govern. It has an automatic driving system – AutoNav. She uses 3D terrain maps to plot a safe route while avoiding obstacles. This allows the rover to move without human intervention. However, rover drivers still have to follow the process to make sure the routes are safe and that Perseverance is heading in the right direction towards geologically interesting samples.
