The richest Irishman refused the services of a gardener

Baron Dunsany Randal Plunkett is the 21st generation of the oldest Irish aristocracy.

He does not look like a noble at all: the 38-year-old man has long hair, he wears clothes made of vegan leather, does not eat food of animal origin. The Baron is also an eco-activist and has created a wildlife oasis on his estate.

His castle, which is a few kilometers from the Irish capital, Dublin, no longer has pets and landscaping with specially planted plants.

The Plunketts have owned this property for over 900 years! And now on its territory, as before, wild animals and birds live, and instead of roses, wormwood grows.

The aristocrat decided on the experiment eight years ago. Then the locals did not understand why he was doing all this, and even called him an idiot.

– For more than five years I have not told anyone why it was all started, – shared Randal Plunkett. – But I am the keeper of this place, the estate for me is not only the castle, but also the environment.

The neighbors, who once expressed their outrage against the radical changes in the baron's estate, are now surprised when they see wild martens and deer. Birds often fly over the estate: kites, hawks, snipe and woodpeckers. Previously, such an abundance of flora and fauna was not observed in these parts.

– Observing all this, I began to understand the important natural processes occurring on our planet, – explains the aristocrat. – I would like the beauty of this place to become pristine. And so that people who miss the wilderness come here.

Ireland is often called the “Emerald Isle” for its abundance of green spaces. But today more than 65% of its area is devoted to agricultural land. According to the baron, their reduction will reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase biodiversity.
