Sydner drew the audience's attention to a Los Angeles resident who lost her mother and stepfather within 11 days. Both of her relatives have died from the effects of COVID-19.
“It’s very hard to see how such families have to cope after the tragedy … No family should go through this,” the reporter said through tears. She apologized several times to the presenters in the studio and the audience for showing her emotions. At the end of the message, the saddened Sydner noted that people need to do everything possible to avoid victims and protect their loved ones, friends and neighbors.
The broadcast quickly went viral on social media. Many viewers described it as heartbreaking, and used it to convince other people to wear a mask in public.
In December 2020, the host of the British morning show BBC Breakfast Louise Minchin shed a tear on the air after watching a touching episode of a nursing home.
