The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) has estimated the probability of a sudden explosion of the Sun. Anatoly Petrukovich, director of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said in an interview with RIA Novosti that this is unlikely.
“Extremely unlikely. The behavior of the Sun as a thermonuclear reactor is calculated and verified, ”he said, answering a question about whether the Sun could suddenly explode.
The scientist added that the explosion of a nearby star could have a catastrophic external effect on the Sun. However, according to him, “we have a quiet place in the galaxy, so supernovae are extremely rare in our vicinity.” The closest stars to Earth that could theoretically explode are tens of light years away. “These are blue giants, and they are all in a stage that is still far from explosions,” Petrukovich reassured.
The director of the institute also said during an interview that one can assume the emergence of “evil aliens” who will “conquer” earthlings.
On November 29, an explosion occurred on the Sun, which became the most powerful flare in the past three years. She was given a fourth point on a five-point scale. The explosion took place on the side of the Sun that is invisible from Earth, so there is a possibility that the power of the flare was much stronger than it follows from the readings of cosmic X-ray detectors.
