The pretended Christmas bonus was a phishing test

by alex

Before Christmas, the domain provider GoDaddy checked whether the employees had fallen for a phishing email.

An email from the employer with a $ 650 Christmas bonus if you fill out a form under a link: This is what the domain provider GoDaddy promised its employees in an email. However, this was a so-called phishing test. The email was not real, it was an attempt at fraud – at least it was disguised as such an email, in fact it came from the company itself.

Around 500 employees filled out a form to collect the Christmas bonus, reports Endgadget. But instead of the bonus, they received an email a few days later that they had not passed the phishing test and therefore had to go to security training. Among other things, they had provided data on the form, such as their business location and other information relating to the company.

Employee angry

Some of the employees were angry that this phishing test came in the middle of a time of crisis. GoDaddy had laid off numerous employees this year, even though the company had actually achieved record growth. GoDaddy even apologized to the staff for this, although phishing tests of this kind are quite common. “We have to be more careful with our employees in the future,” they say.

In November, it became known that GoDaddy had made phone calls to fraudulent internet traffic to cryptocurrency trading websites. Employees had been tricked into redirecting domain ownership.
