The Poland national football team is not going to play against Russia in the 2022 World Cup qualifying play-off. This was announced by the President of the Polish Football Union Cesar Kulesha.
“Finally, it’s time to act. Due to the aggravation of the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the Polish team does not intend to play the playoff match against Russia. This is the only correct solution. We are negotiating with the federations of Sweden and the Czech Republic in order to convey a common position to FIFA,” Kulesha wrote.
The website of the Polish Football Union has already published a joint appeal of the Swedish Football Federation and the Football Association of the Czech Republic, which categorically condemn Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
– The observed military escalation is associated with serious consequences and a significant decrease in the level of security of our missions and official delegations.
Therefore, we expect an immediate response from FIFA and UEFA and the presentation of alternative solutions for upcoming matches.
Bayern and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski reacted to Kulesha's statement, saying that he could not imagine how to play with Russia in such a situation.
– This is the right decision! I can't imagine playing with the Russian team in such a situation. Russian football players and fans are not responsible for this, but we cannot pretend that nothing is happening,” Lewandowski wrote.
Earlier it became known that the Union of European Football Federations (UEFA) moved the final of the Champions League-2022 from Russian St. Petersburg to Paris due to Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.
