Russia's Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said that the demands of the European Union (EU) on the Russian Federation to compensate for almost 300 billion euros due to the import substitution policy are a joke. He expressed outrage on his Twitter page.

“They must be joking! The European Union, which has imposed economic sanctions against Russia, is seeking compensation from Russia for its countermeasures (import substitution program). He accuses Moscow of “illegal discrimination” of European goods! Can you believe it? Big moral problems, “Ulyanov wrote.

Earlier, the EU demanded from Russia almost 300 billion euros for the import substitution policy. As they say in Europe, Russia “illegally discriminated” European goods for such an amount. Later, the Ministry of Economic Development denied information that the EU is seeking compensation in a dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

On December 22, similar accusations were made by the United States. US trade representative Catherine Tai said that Washington sees import substitution and preferences for domestic goods and services as Russia's departure from WTO norms. According to her, the United States decided to work on countermeasures through the WTO and prevent Moscow from developing this direction.
