Russia, despite the economic sanctions imposed on it, remains a threat to the existence of the United States and Europe. This was stated by the head of the US European Command, General Tod Walters, at the Air Force Association forum. His words are quoted on the Pentagon website.
Walters explained that Moscow is conducting “destabilizing and malicious actions” in the world, with many of the actions taking place close to Europe. In particular, Russia is trying to divide and weaken the US partners and allies, he is convinced. In addition, the country, together with China, continues to militarize the Arctic and is trying to create an economic foothold for regional influence, he said.
The general added that ensuring US security requires a global effort. “We live in a time of great power competition. Victory now ensures that the rivalry between the great powers does not escalate into a global war, ”concluded Walters.
Earlier, the candidate for the post of head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) William Burns urged the United States not to underestimate Russia. At the same time, he classified the country as one of the “weakening powers”. During the presidency of Vladimir Putin, he said, Moscow has the same capabilities as “rising powers” like China. In this regard, he considered it necessary to assess the threats emanating from Russia coldly and soberly.
