Opening of the memorial study of Ivan Papanin in Arkhangelsk.

A memorial office for the Soviet explorer of the Arctic, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Ivan Papanin, was opened in Arkhangelsk.

The office was recreated in the building of the government of the Arkhangelsk region on Troitsky Prospekt, in the room on the first floor – the same one from which Ivan Papanin headed the Main Directorate of the Northern Sea Route from 1939 to 1946.

In the office, the authentic atmosphere of the period of the autumn of 1941 was completely restored, collecting it bit by bit in different regions of the country, the press service of the Arkhangelsk government said. Parquet and a door were found in one of the old houses in St. Petersburg. An original ink set used by Papanin is installed on a work table covered with green cloth. The office also has a grandfather clock, telephones, a 1936 radio and a gramophone.

Figures were installed in the museum room: this is Papanin himself, standing at his desk, as well as Admiral Nikolai Kuznetsov and the head of the polar aviation department of the Glavsevmorput Ilya Mazuruk.

Researchers Igor Slobodyanyuk and Alexei Sukhanovsky came up with the idea of creating a memorial study for Ivan Papanin in Arkhangelsk.

August 31 in the calendar of regional memorable dates of the Arkhangelsk region is fixed as the Day of Northern Convoys. This year Arkhangelsk celebrates the 80th anniversary of the arrival of the first allied convoy “Dervish”. In memory of this, a naval parade was held in the city.
