To date, 66 Russians are serving sentences in Iraq for involvement in the activities of the Islamic State ( IS, a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation ). The number of those punished became known from the words of the Russian Ambassador to Iraq Elbrus Kutrashev, RIA Novosti reports.
“Three militants and 63 women who were involved in assisting are now serving their sentences in Iraq. The rest, I believe, died in battle. All militants of Russian origin in terrorist organizations, as practice has shown, are cannon fodder,” the diplomat said.
On February 9, Rear Admiral Oleg Zhuravlev, deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties (CPVS) in Syria, said that former IS fighters, granted amnesty with US support, are leaving Syria on fake passports for the United States, Canada and Europe.
