The number of natural disasters in the world has increased fivefold over the past almost 50 years, the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said.
Disasters have arisen due to climate change, mainly due to the rise in average temperatures on the planet. Between 1970 and 2019, there were more than 11,000 natural disasters around the world, affecting more than 2 million people, with 91% of deaths occurring in developing countries. The damage from the disasters amounted to $ 3.6 trillion, according to a report on the WMO website.
It is reported that the drought led to the death of 650 thousand people, storms – 577 thousand, the victims of floods were 59 thousand people, and as a result of the heat wave, 56 thousand inhabitants of the Earth died. Natural disasters also caused large economic losses: in the 1970s, they amounted to $ 49 million, in the period from 2010 to 2019 – 383 million.
According to the report, seven of the ten most devastating disasters in terms of economic impact occurred in 2005, three in 2017.
We will remind, earlier the President of Russia Vladimir Putin called the unprecedented nature of natural disasters in the regions of Russia. Earlier, the head of state said that the difficult situation with natural fires and floods in the country is largely related to climate change on the planet.
