The northernmost island on Earth is open off the coast of Greenland

The northernmost island in the world is open off the coast of Greenland, writes Reuters.

According to Morten Rush, the head of the research center of the Arctic Station in Greenland, the island was discovered by an expedition led by him by accident – the search for new land was not included in her plans. It turned out to be a surface area of about 30 square meters, consisting of silt and glacial deposits. Scientists suggested calling it “Qeqertaq Avannarleq”, which means “the northernmost island” in Greenlandic.

Until now, the northernmost island in the world was considered a piece of land called ATOW1996, discovered in 1996 during the American Top of the World expedition, writes Pulse. The island is located at 83 ° 40'34 ″ north latitude and is a rock protruding from the sea. Its length is only 10 meters and its height is one meter. Geographically, the island belongs to Greenland.

Previously, scientists have compiled a map of the disappeared mainland of Zealand. It lies more than a kilometer deep in the South Pacific. The mainland was opened in 2017.
