The reason for the refusal to travel to China will be the increase in the number of cases of coronavirus in the NHL. The decision is to be taken and announced on December 22 by a vote of the League and the players' union. It is noted that if the majority of athletes vote not to participate in the Games, then NHL players will not go to Beijing. Individual hockey players will not be allowed to go to the Olympics.
In October, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly announced that the league could ban ice hockey players from the Olympics. This is due to a possible exacerbation against the background of the coronavirus pandemic.
In early September, the NHL officially announced that it would allow players to play at the Games in Beijing. Competitions will be held from 9 to 20 February.
