The new sidewalk on the Vienna Danube Canal will be ready in March

In Vienna, a new footpath is being built on the Danube Canal between Franzensbrücke and Rotundenbrücke. A gap is closed, strollers are happy.

Until now, pedestrians and cyclists who wanted to continue along the Danube Canal in Leopoldstadt in Vienna were faced with a natural barrier. To get further, you had to go up to the busy Schüttelstraße, where there is only a narrow sidewalk along the road. To make it more pleasant for walkers, a new footpath has been built into the sloping meadow since mid-October. The district is thus complying with a request made by neighbors for a long time.

“The meadow was removed accordingly and then we built an approximately 30 centimeter thick layer of frost protection,” explains project manager Christoph Fehringer in an interview with the Orf broadcast “Vienna today”. According to the TV report City of Vienna and the federal government, the construction costs of around 150,000 euros are shared.

The new path should be ready at the beginning of March, then the bank of the Danube Canal should be completely accessible and passable for cyclists. A “lane separation” was not possible for cost reasons, according to the project manager. There would have been more space for it on the opposite bank on Erdberger Lände.
