The Russian Navy (Navy) by the end of 2023 will receive the upgraded mini-cruiser Admiral Chabanenko, which will become the carrier of the Zircon hypersonic missiles. The Izvestia agency writes about this.

According to the sources of the publication in the defense department, the plan for the modernization of the unique ship of the Northern Fleet has already been agreed. The ship's hull is being repaired now.

Since the early 1990s, “Admiral Chabanenko” has been one of the most powerful representatives of the Russian Navy. After the modernization, the vessel, which was originally built as a large anti-submarine ship (BOD), will change its status and become a frigate. However, it is noted that, in fact, taking into account the large dimensions (7.7 thousand tons of displacement) and a set of weapons, it will be able to fully perform the functions of a cruiser.

After the modernization, Admiral Chabanenko will also receive an extensive arsenal. It will become one of the standard carriers of the Zircon hypersonic missile, the tests of which are nearing completion. In addition, it will carry Kalibr and Kh-35 cruise missiles, as well as the unique Answer torpedo missiles. Thus, “Admiral Chabanenko” will be able to work on any type of target – surface, underwater, ground and air.

Earlier it was reported that Russia would begin construction of Project 955A (Borei-A) strategic missile submarine cruisers. They will be laid at the Sevmash enterprise in 2023. The nuclear powered ships will be built as part of the state armament program, which is in effect until 2027. They will be the 11th and 12th Borei-class submarines.
