Samsung turned out to be the largest smartphone supplier in the first quarter of 2021. This was reported in a study by Strategy Analytics.
In the first quarter, the Korean company shipped 77 million smartphones to the market worldwide. As a result, the corporation's market share was 23 percent. In second place was Apple, with the US-based maker shipped 57 million iPhones, gaining a 17 percent share. The top 3 is closed by Xiaomi – 49 million devices and a share of 15 percent.
The top five also included the Chinese Oppo and Vivo – 11 percent for each company. At the same time, the explosive growth was demonstrated not by Samsung, which was called the most popular supplier of phones, but by Chinese corporations. “This has been a sensational quarter for the Chinese smartphone market, driven by the success of 5G products across multiple price points,” said Linda Sui, senior director at Strategy Analytics. China's smartphone shipments are up 35 percent from the same period in 2020 to 94 million units.
Global smartphone shipments reached 340 million units, up 24 percent from the first quarter of 2020. Analysts noted that this is the highest growth since 2015.
Experts said that the reasons for the growth of the phone market were an increase in demand among users of outdated devices and the growing popularity of gadgets with 5G support. The semiconductor shortage observed in recent months has not had a significant impact on the situation, however, the processor shortage may become a serious problem in the next quarters of 2021.
According to MTS, the iPhone 11 in different memory variants turned out to be the most popular phone in Russia from January to March 2021. The Russian market for the year increased by 27 percent in monetary terms and amounted to 153 billion rubles.
