Opposition activists from the Moldovan party “Civic Congress” brought bags of manure to the protest and suggested that the government use them instead of the more expensive gas. This is reported by RIA Novosti.
According to the organizers, about 600 protesters gathered at the rally near the Moldovan parliament building. They placed bags of manure at the entrance and attached signs with the offer to “drown for yourself.”
The demonstrators organized a protest against the increase in gas prices for domestic consumers, from $ 569 to $ 785 (an increase of 38 percent from the previous price) per thousand cubic meters. This decision was made by the National Agency for Energy Regulation of Moldova (ANRE), the opposition intends to oppose the initiative in court.
“Moldova has turned from a European country into a medieval reservation, prices even for dung rose to unprecedented heights. This is the future of our country, which was built by the ruling government instead of providing us with adequate gas prices,” said Yuri Muntyan, one of the protest leaders.
In mid-January, the Moldovan parliament imposed a state of emergency (state of emergency) for 60 days due to the gas crisis, which is associated with the risk of stopping supplies from Gazprom due to payment problems. The Russian company warned that it would go on suspension if it did not receive funds on time. Moldova has found an opportunity to pay for gas, but Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilitsa accused Gazprom of an unfriendly gesture.
