The canvas, written by a Dutch master in 1642, lacked stripes on four sides. IT specialists managed to project them on the basis of a copy of the painting (by Gerrit Lundens). But for this, the painting skills had to be taught to the computer.
Tako Dibbits, director of the Rijksmuseum: “We used artificial intelligence. We taught the computer what palette Rembrandt worked with, what colors he used. Because the color solution of the copy was different. The computer mastered the perspective, the artist's technique. he painted with strokes. “
The group portrait of Rembrandt, also known as “Speech by the rifle company of Captain Frans Banning Kock and Lieutenant Willem van Ruutenburg”, was cropped at the beginning of the 18th century – the painting did not enter the doorway of the town hall, where they wanted to hang it.
When the fragments were recreated, three new characters appeared – two archers and a child. Art critics say that their presence changes the perspective and even makes adjustments to the plot of the story.
Taco Dibbits, director of the Rijksmuseum:
“Seeing this work today in its original format, you understand that Rembrandt is even more brilliant than we thought. Usually the artist places the main character in the center of the canvas. But Rembrandt decided to create a movement by placing him at a distance. This painting tells a story. It turns out that the captain (the figure in black) gives the order to his lieutenant (the figure in white) to advance. This march is movement. That is, now we see the dynamics. “
The painting “The Night Watch – albeit not quite in its original form, but for the first time in 300 years in its original form – is available to the visitors of the Rijksmuseum in the coming months.
