The units of the Russian Armed Forces have now established full control over the Ukrainian city of Melitopol. On Saturday, February 26, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Major General Igor Konashenkov, told Lente.ru.
According to him, Russian servicemen are now taking all necessary measures to exclude provocations from Ukrainian nationalists and special services, as well as to ensure the safety of the civilian population.
Earlier, on February 26, it was reported that Russian units marched after the landing of an amphibious assault in the area of u200bu200bthe settlement of Azov and, without meeting resistance, entered Melitopol in the Zaporozhye region. It was noted that the locals welcomed them.
The start of a military operation to protect Donbass became known on Thursday, February 24, after President Vladimir Putin addressed the Russians. According to him, Moscow was forced to do this by the difficult situation in the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DNR and LNR). Earlier, the representative of the People's Militia of the DPR, Eduard Basurin, spoke about the deteriorating situation in the region, called what was happening a genocide and turned to Russia for help.
