Robert O'Neal took part in Operation Neptune Spear, during which the elite American Navy SEAL team successfully located and killed the founder and first leader of the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda.
Bin Laden was fatally shot at his home in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 2, 2011.
O'Neal claimed to have fired the fatal shots and recounted his experience many times over the years.
Speaking on the Full Send podcast, O'Neil explained what prompted him to participate in the operation.
He recalled: “We said, 'We're not going after bin Laden for fame or money. We're going after Osama bin Laden for the single mother who dropped her kids off at elementary school on Tuesday and then 45 minutes later jumped to her death from a skyscraper because that's a better alternative than whatever the hell was going on.” And her last gesture of human decency was to hold up her skirt as she killed herself. She should never have been in the fight. We should have been in the fight.”
Speaking about the deadly mission on The Shawn Ryan Show, he said: “I hear Bin Laden take his last breath. When I shot him, he fell on the back bed. I shot him three times in the face. I moved Amal (Bin Laden's wife) and… his two-year-old son is standing there now, and this is all humanity. This child has nothing to do with this. I am the father. I took him in my arms and carried him to the headboard.”
O'Neal said that after the fatal shots he “felt frozen” when other SEALs entered the room.
He continued: “There were a lot of guys there, and one of my guys came up to me and asked, “Are you okay?,” and I said, “No, what should we do now? “. And he said: “Now we find computers. We do this every night—hundreds of times.” “And I was like, 'Fuck yeah.' He told me: “You just killed Osama bin Laden – your life has changed, get to damn work.” That's what we did.”
The team then took several photographs of Bin Laden. Robert said the pictures weren't released because people “don't need to know what justice looks like when it's done.”
O'Neil was born in Montana. He joined the army at the age of 19 after an unsuccessful romance. He participated in 400 military operations, including in Iraq and Afghanistan.
For the murder of “terrorist number one” O'Neil was awarded a special award.
