Hong Kong Customs spoke of an unusual attempt to smuggle expensive computer processors. In June, at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, inspectors stopped one of the drivers for a check. The man behaved strangely and was very nervous, so they decided to search him. There was nothing suspicious in the car itself, but one of the customs officers decided to look under the driver's shirt. It turned out that the smuggler had attached Intel Core i7 10700 and Core i9 10900K microchips to his torso with tape.

According to Hong Kong customs, Intel processors were also attached to the man's legs. In total, he tried to transport 256 chips on his body. Now one Intel Core i7 10700 processor in Russia costs about 25,000 rubles, and the Core i9 10900K will cost about 45,000 rubles.

Recently, amid a shortage of chips, attempts to smuggle them have become more frequent. On June 26, Hong Kong customs officials stopped the illegal transportation of 52 Intel processors on the same bridge. The driver hid them between the front seats of the car. The department believes that these two cases are related. The total cost of the seized from both smugglers is estimated at about $ 128,000 (9.5 million rubles at the current exchange rate).

In early summer, Hong Kong customs seized a huge shipment of electronics smuggled. The attackers tried to transport over 2,200 processors, 1,000 RAM sticks, about 630 smartphones and 70 cosmetics. The approximate cost of the confiscated goods is $ 515,000 (38 million rubles).

As analysts from TrendForce calculated, the world's leading chip manufacturers, against the background of their shortage, received record revenue in the first quarter of 2021 – over $ 20 billion, and more than half of the revenues came from one company. Earlier, Tesla founder Elon Musk compared the semiconductor crisis to a shortage of toilet paper. The crisis also affected the Russian industry.
