The PlayStation 5 console has received support for saving games to an external drive, but you cannot run titles directly from disk. This is reported by the ArsTechnica edition.
Reporters drew attention to a message from the PlayStation team that appeared on the site on April 13. It said that Sony has activated the ability to store games on a third-party SSD drive – this will allow console users to partially offload the main storage of the console. However, as noted by the authors of the publication, we are talking only about the so-called “cold storage”, which means only finding games on an external drive.
In the material, this feature was called one of the main disadvantages of the PS5. “You cannot play PS5 titles saved on the latest generation drive, as they require higher read / write speeds,” said the experts. However, some major releases take up a lot of disk space. For example, a full install of Black Ops: Cold War requires over 200 gigabytes of memory.
The good news, according to journalists, is that gamers can transfer some of the unclaimed games from the main drive of the console to an additional one and store them there. According to the documentation, the PlayStation 5 has 825 gigabytes of internal memory, but the user has access to only 667 gigabytes, since about 20 percent of the storage space is occupied by the operating system.
“It looks like Sony is conducting a beta testing period for its customers – we still don't know exactly how the STB's drive will work in the future!” – note the authors.
In comparison, Microsoft's competitive Xbox Series X / S consoles only support proprietary NVMe drives from Seagate, which have capacities of 1 terabyte or more. The cost of an additional disk is 220 dollars, in Russia the accessory from Seagate is available for 13.6 thousand rubles.
