About half of patients who are admitted to hospital with COVID-19 have serious complications. The main ones were listed by scientists in an article published in the Lancet magazine, RIA Novosti reports.

Experts came to the conclusion that men suffered the most, as well as people over 60 years old. However, health also worsened in young, previously healthy people.

Most often, patients developed renal, complex respiratory, cardiovascular and systemic disorders, as well as problems with the gastrointestinal tract and liver. The most common diagnoses were acute kidney injury, acute respiratory distress syndrome, liver damage, anemia, and cardiac arrhythmia.

Also, many patients complained of deteriorating health after being discharged from the hospital. Scientists have warned that some of them will face the long-term effects of the infection.

Only 51 percent of patients aged 50 and older developed complications, 39 percent – aged 19 to 49 years. Also 27 percent said their ability to take care of themselves declined after they left the hospital.

Earlier, Alexander Rumyantsev, the chief freelance pediatric oncologist and hematologist of the Russian Ministry of Health, said that moderate physical activity and spa treatment would help to recover from COVID-19. According to him, people who have had a coronavirus infection need to improve blood circulation. This can be done through sports.
