The Lyrid meteor shower will pass over the Earth

The Lyrid meteor shower will peak on Thursday 22 August. But the residents of Russia will not be able to see it because of the bad atmospheric conditions, according to Vechernyaya Moskva.

According to the astronomer of the Moscow Planetarium Lyudmila Koshman, the visibility will not be very good, as the stream will “light up” the Moon. The peculiarity of the stream is that it consists of “long, long fireballs” – large meteors that fall every one to two minutes.

The Lyrids are one of the most ancient streams known to mankind. People began to observe him 2.5 thousand years ago. It is known that the stream was formed by the comet C / 1861 G1 Thatcher. In April 1803, an unusual record was recorded on the east coast of the United States: the number of falling meteors reached 700 per hour.

Recall that in early January, the Quadrantid stream passed over the Earth. It owes its unusual name to an old astronomical instrument.
