Representatives of Ukraine themselves chose the Belarusian Gomel as a place for negotiations with Russia. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, RIA Novosti reports on Sunday, February 27.
“The city of Gomel was proposed by the Ukrainian side – specifically by the Ukrainian side – as a place for negotiations,” Peskov stressed. He added that this time the events within the framework of Russia's special operation to protect Donbass would not be suspended in anticipation of a possible meeting with representatives of Kyiv.
Thus, he reacted to the refusal of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky to come to the talks on the territory of Belarus.
Earlier, Peskov said that the Russian delegation, consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense and the presidential administration, arrived in Belarusian Gomel and would be waiting for representatives of Ukraine. In response, Zelensky said that he considered negotiations on the territory of Belarus impossible, and offered to hold them in Warsaw, Bratislava, Budapest, Istanbul or Baku.
