The Kremlin is trying to recruit Germans into espionage after the mass expulsion of Russian diplomats

The spies received approximately 400,000 euros for their services.

Russia is increasingly resorting to blackmail and financial incentives to recruit Germans for espionage. This occurs against the backdrop of the expulsion of about 600 Russian diplomats across Europe.

This writes Reuters with reference to the German internal security service.

Germany's Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution said that Russian intelligence services are spending heavily on recruiting agents in Germany, despite Western attempts to limit their activities after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

“Russia is working hard to compensate for the German government's reduction in the number of Russian agents in Germany,” – the head of the BfV said at a press conference Thomas Haldenwang.

It is noted that two German citizens who were charged with treason for espionage last August in favor of Russia, received approximately 400,000 euros for their services.

“Agent fees indicate that Russian services continue to have enormous financial resources to achieve their intelligence goals,” the report adds.

Germans who lived in Russia or regularly traveled there were especially at risk of becoming targets of Russian intelligence services, including German diplomats who could easily be made vulnerable to blackmail attempts.

“Once they receive damaging information about their targets, these services do not hesitate to use aggressive recruitment methods,” they added.< /p>
