Indonesian authorities have taken up arms against the popular video game Fortnite. Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said that the game has a custom map where the structure is supposedly reminiscent of the Kaaba – the main sanctuary of Islam. And since gamers are invited to destroy this building, the official saw an insult to Muslims in the shooter. The developer of the game Epic Games has already announced that the object cannot be destroyed – but, despite this, the authorities called for a ban on Fortnite in the country and at the same time put the creator of the map on the wanted list.
Sandiaga Uno complained about Fortnite on his Instagram. Friends told him about the possibility of destroying a building on one of the custom maps in the game. According to them, in order to get weapons and equipment, gamers are offered to destroy the object. Presumably, the minister was informed of a 2019 video in which a Fortnite player builds a cubic structure vaguely reminiscent of the Kaaba.
Epic Games on its page hastened to reassure officials and explained that the players have no opportunity to destroy such a building. The company also emphasized that it respects all religions and works closely with users who create content in Fortnite's creative mode.
But in Indonesia, the creators of the custom map still intend to punish. “The Ministry of Communications and Information is coordinating with the National Police of Indonesia to track down and take action against the criminals who created the content,” said the head of the department Johnny Plate.
Fortnite's online battle royale shooter was released in 2017. In less than a year, the number of players reached 125 million users. The characters, which the gamers play, end up on the island, where they have to survive. To do this, they need to find weapons, build shelter and destroy rivals. The only survivor wins.
Fortnite became the most grossing video game of 2019 in 2019, generating $ 1.8 billion for Epic Games.
