The number of new infections with the novel coronavirus last week rose for the first time in seven weeks. The increase in the incidence was announced by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adan Ghebreyesus, reports Reuters.
“If countries only rely on vaccines, they are making a mistake. Public health measures are still at the core of the fight against the pandemic, ”he said.
According to the head of WHO, many countries have relaxed the prohibitions necessary to defeat the epidemic, and therefore the increase in the number of new cases was “disappointing, but not unexpected.” He also spoke about another mistake of the authorities: some countries first of all vaccinate young and healthy citizens, who are less threatened by the infection than the elderly.
On February 23, Gebreyesus named the condition for the effectiveness of vaccination against coronavirus. According to him, the vaccination campaign should take place everywhere. He also called on countries to explain to their citizens that not only vaccination is needed to protect them from coronavirus, but also vaccinations throughout the rest of the world.
