The first bombing of Berlin by Soviet aviation, heroically committed 80 years ago by Soviet pilots in practically impossible conditions, was a real shock for the Nazis. This bombing showed that Nazi Germany would not be able to attack Moscow and other cities of the USSR with impunity. The military historian and expert of the Russian Military Historical Society Nikita Buranov spoke about this.
Last Saturday it was exactly 80 years since Soviet planes raided the German capital. The operation then seemed completely unrealizable – the crews acted in extremely difficult conditions, but they were still able to complete the task. And this shocked the Third Reich.
– The effect was maximum, it was an absolute shock for the Nazis. They saw that the Red Army continued to fight, that unpunished bombing of the USSR was impossible. We saw that, if desired, the Soviet Union is capable of responding to any blow to its capital with a blow to Berlin, – Nikita Buranov emphasized in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The historian explained that the USSR had several reasons for such a risky maneuver. First, it was unacceptable to leave unanswered the German bombers' raids on Moscow. The second reason was strategic: Berlin was the main industrial and administrative center of the enemy, which means that an attack on it could damage the military machine of the Third Reich.
