The health of the first people with coronavirus assessed

About half of those who recovered from the coronavirus in Wuhan in early 2020 still have health problems, Chinese researchers have found. An article by scientists was published in The Lancet.

The long-term effects of COVID-19 are of increasing concern to scientists and doctors. The health of the first people with coronavirus who were discharged from Jinyintan Hospital in Wuhan from January to May 2020 was already assessed six months after discharge. Researchers have now assessed their health a year after they suffered the coronavirus.

Most of the symptoms of COVID-19 have passed, but 49 percent of the 1,276 patients, whose average age was 57, still experienced at least one of them. Almost a third of people – 26 percent – continued to have difficulty breathing. This was especially true for people with the most severe course of coronavirus – among them, the proportion of such people was 39 percent. The second most common symptom was muscle weakness – experienced by 20 percent of the study participants. Moreover, women experienced it 1.4 times more often than men. In addition, they were twice as likely to have anxiety disorder or depression and three times as often to have diffusion lung failure.
