Lloyd Austin is now recovering and is expected to return to full duty on January 6.

Head of the US Department of Defense Lloyd Austin was hospitalized on January 1, 2024 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center due to complications arising from a recent elective medical procedure.

This is reported by the Pentagon website.

“On the evening of January 1, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center due to complications from a recent elective medical procedure,” said Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat. Rider.

Austin is now recovering and is expected to return to full duty today. It is also clarified that while the head of the Pentagon was in the hospital, his duties were performed by Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks.

“At any time, the Deputy Minister of Defense was ready to act on behalf of the minister and carry out his powers if necessary,” he added.

Recall, Rustem Umerov and Lloyd Austin discussed a number of issues on December 22, including, for example, the Ramstein meeting.
