The former Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation believes that the current Japanese names of some of the Kuril Islands are “illogical”.
Dmitry Rogozin, Director General of the Russian space agency Roskosmos, said that the Kuril Islands, which are the subject of a territorial dispute with Japan, could be renamed after Russian ships from the Russo-Japanese War of the early 20th century. He made such a statement on Monday, May 23, on the air of the state radio Sputnik, Reuters reports.
In particular, Rogozin, previously a former vice prime minister and head of the Russian defense industry, proposed changing the name of one of the islands on the “Varyag” – in honor of the cruiser, the flooding of which began p the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. He proposed to give another island the name of another Russian ship of that time – “Koreets”.
According to him, it was “more logical”, since modern Japanese names “destroy the Russian language”.
The territorial dispute over the islands, which Russia says are part of its Kuril chain, and Japan calls its Northern Territories, prevented Tokyo and Moscow from reaching a peace agreement that officially ended the hostilities of World War II.
Recall, that Japan joined its Western allies in imposing economic sanctions against Russia after the Kremlin unleashed a war of conquest against Ukraine.
