The name of Academician Yuri Trutnev is forever inscribed in the history of atomic science, said Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev, his words are quoted on the state corporation's website. The scientist died on August 6 at the age of 94.

“On behalf of the large team of the nuclear industry and on my own behalf, I express my deep condolences in connection with the death of an outstanding scientist, the pride of the Russian nuclear weapons complex, Yuri Alekseevich Trutnev,” the statement reads.

Likhachev recalled that Trutnev was one of the creators of nuclear and thermonuclear weapons. He called him “the most active and prolific developer of thermonuclear weapons” in Russia, whose achievements even “now help to maintain the defense capability of our Motherland at the highest level.” The head of Rosatom also noted the scientist's contribution to the development of proton radiography, which is “of key importance in the terms of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.”

Trutnev will remain in memory “as a bright and original scientist, a tireless researcher, a man of high moral principles and state thinking,” Likhachev noted.

The scientist will be buried in Sarov, Nizhny Novgorod region, a representative of Rosatom told RIA Novosti. In the Russian Federal Nuclear Center, located in a closed city, the All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC-VNIIEF), Trutnev has worked all his life.

Trutnev, in particular, is known for the fact that in 1961, on his initiative and with his participation, the world's most powerful thermonuclear aviation bomb AN602 (Tsar Bomba) was created. She was tested in the autumn of the same year.
