Dell has an Alienware m15 M5 gaming laptop with a GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card. As it turns out, the device has a defective GPU.
Sources write that Dell installed a stripped-down graphics card in the laptop with 10% of CUDA cores disabled – there are 4608 of them in the system instead of 5120. It is alleged that the company may have deliberately reduced the performance of the Alienware m15 R5 Ryzen 5000 series. Videocardz notes that this is an unprecedented case for gaming laptops. It looks especially strange against the background of the fact that NVIDIA now gives manufacturers a lot of freedom in terms of GPU settings.
Dell has already confirmed disabling cores. It is noted that this decision was made by engineers after testing the laptop and choosing a design. The company also apologized.
