The girl, who was born during an evacuation flight from Afghanistan to Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, was named Rich – by the plane's call sign.
Mother and child at Ramstein Base
The parents decided to name the girl, who was born during an evacuation flight from Afghanistan to the American Ramstein airbase in Germany (Rhineland-Palatinate), in honor of the US Air Force C-17 military transport aircraft, which took her mother out of Kabul. This was announced on Wednesday, August 25, by the commander-in-chief of the NATO Allied Forces in Europe, US Air Force General Tod Walters.
According to him, the baby was given the name Rich (Reach, coverage. – Ed .) – as the call sign of this plane. “As you can imagine – as an Air Force pilot – my dream is for a kid named Rich to grow up, get US citizenship, and (later) fly US Air Force fighters,” Tod Walters said via video link from the Pentagon.
Rich was born a few minutes after landing in Germany
Rich was born on August 21. Her mother's contractions began in the air, the baby was born in the cargo hold of the car a few minutes after landing. The girl and her mother were taken to the US military hospital in Landstuhl (Rhineland-Palatinate). Meanwhile, it became known that over the past week, two more children were born to the evacuated Afghan women there.
Evacuation from Afghanistan
A number of states continue to evacuate their citizens, as well as certain categories of civilians from Afghanistan after the seizure of power there by the radical Islamist Taliban movement. The White House reported on August 25 that more than 82,300 citizens of Afghanistan, the United States and other states have been taken out of the country since August 14 on military transport planes of the Americans and their allies, as well as on international and private flights.
According to the Washington administration, up to 1,500 more American citizens may remain in Afghanistan. About 500 of them have already received specific instructions regarding the upcoming evacuation, said US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
Meanwhile, as reported by Der Spiegel on its website, the last A400M military transport aircraft of the Bundeswehr is due to take off from Kabul on Thursday, August 26.
